Summary
A case of botulism on a stretch of water in the Erft district near Cologne is reported. In the period 21. 8. to 16. 9. 1983 a total of 450 water- and marsh-fowl died from the characteristic clinical symptoms of botulism. The principal symptoms were impairment of the nervous system, such as difficulties in movement, paralysis of the wings, sight disturbances, difficulty in swallowing, paralysis of the throat muscles, extreme diarrhoea and breathing problems. By means of centrifusion and sterilized filtration, an ectotoxin could be obtained from the blood serum of the sick animals as well as from the gastro-intestinal content. This proved to be highly toxic in the mouse experiment and could be neutralised with Clostridium botulinum-Antitoxin Type C.
