Summary
The tumor blood flow, the uptake of O2 and glucose and the production of lactate were determined under standardised conditions in 35 implantation tumors (DS-carcinosarcoma) of rat kidneys. In parallel investigations the intercapillary distances, the diameters and length of the capillaries were measured using injection preparations. With increasing age respectively weight of the tumors it was found:
-
1.
The tumor blood flow, the uptake of O2 and glucose of tumor tissue decreased. The uptake of O2 decreased comparatively more than the uptake of glucose. The glycolytic rate increased. High-grade concentration of lactate and low pH values were measured in the venous blood of the tumor. The lactate-pyruvate-ratio reached an average of 45.5.
-
2.
The inter-capillary distances, the length and diameters of the capillaries enlarged.
The low-grade O2- and glucose uptake of the tumors is explained by the changing supply conditions. The O2- and glucose transport through the blood decreased; the supplying areas of each capillary enlarged. Tissue areas with narrow capillary network exist only in small and young tumors. Growing larger, the tissue areas supplied by one capillary increase; the uptake of O2 and glucose decreases at the same time.
