Zusammenfassung
Nach einer 30tägigen Frostperiode im Februar/März 1986 konnten auf der niederländischen Wattenmeerinsel Texel 86 tote Austernfischer untersucht werden. 67% aller Totfunde wiesen Deformationen an Schnäbeln und Beinen auf. 60,7% waren Vögel im ersten Lebensjahr. Der Anteil adulter betrug 8,3%. Die Totfunde wiesen ein Untergewicht von 36% auf. Insgesamt dürften 5–6% des Winterbestandes auf Texel dem Frost zum Opfer gefallen sein.
Summary
A spell of frost of 30 days in February/March 1986 caused a high mortality (5–6%) among wintering Oystercatchers on Texel, NL. Anatomical deformations were found in 67% of the frost victims, especially on bill and legs. 60,7% of the frost victims were younger than 1 year and only 8,3% were adults. The mean weight of the 86 victims was about 36% less than the mean normal winter-weights.
