Diabetic microangiopathy in the skin of juvenile diabetics and the offspring of diabetic mothers

Gli AA. hanno studiato l'ispessimento della membrana basale PAS-positiva nei vasi del plesso subpapillare, in biopsie di cute normale di 24 giovani diabetici, di 12 figli normali di madri diabetiche e di 15 volontari di controllo che non presentavano anamnesi familiare di diabete o di disordini metabolici. Si è dimostrato un notevole ispessimento della membrana perivascolare in 22 casi di diabete giovanile, in 4 bambini normali nati da madri diabetiche ed in uno dei controlli. Si conclude che questo metodo di indagine istologica è importante benchè non infallibile per la scoperta del diabete o del prediabete.

Les AA. ont étudié l'épaississement de la membrane basale PAS-positive dans les vaisseaux du plexe soupapillaire dans des biopsies cutanées de 24 jeunes diabétiques, de 12 enfants normaux de mères diabétiques et de 15 volontaires de contrôle qui n'avaient ni altérations métaboliques ni diabète dans l'anamnèse familiale. Un certain epaississement de la membrane perivasculaire a pu être demontré dans 22 cas de diabète juvénile, dans 4 enfants normaux nés de mères diabétiques et dans un cas de contrôle. Les AA. concluent que cette méthode de recherche histologique, quoique non infaillible, est tout de même importante pour la mise en évidence du diabète ou du prédiabète.

Resumen

Los AA. han estudiado el espesamiento de la membrana basal PAS-positiva en los vasos del plexo subpapilar, en biopsias de cutis normal de 24 jovenes diabeticos, de 12 hijos normales de madres diabeticas y de 15 voluntarios de control que no presentavan anamnesis familiares de diabetes o de desordenes metabolicos. Se ha demostrado un notable espesamiento de la membrana perivascular en 22 casos de diabetes juvenil, en 4 niños normales nacidos de madres diabeticas y en uno de los controles. Se concluye que este metodo de investigacion histologica es importante aunque no infalible para descubrir el diabetes o el prediabetes.

Zusammenfassung

Die AA. untersuchten die Verdickung der PAS-positiven Basalmembran von Gefaessen des subpapillaren Plexus mittels Biopsien normaler Haut von 24 jungen Diabetikern, 12 normalen Kindern diabetischer Muetter und 15 freiwilligen Kontrollpersonen ohne familiaere Anamnese eines Diabetes oder Stoffwechselstoerungen. Bei 22 Faellen mit juvenilem Diabetes, 4 normalen Kindern diabetischer Muetter und bei einer Kontrollperson wurde betraechtliche Verdickung der perivaskulaeren Membran festgestellt. Es wird die Schlussfolgerung gezogen, dass diese histologische Untersuchungsmethode wichtig ist, auch wenn sie bei der Entdeckung des Diabetes und Praediabetes nicht unfehlbar ist.

Summary

The thickness of the PAS-positive basement membrane in vessels of the subpapillary plexus has been studied by the AA. in biopsies of normal skin of 24 young diabetics, 12 normal children of diabetic mothers and 15 control volunteers, who had no history of family diabetes or metabolic disorders. A marked thickening of the perivascular membrane was demonstrated in 22 cases of juvenile diabetics, in 4 normal children of diabetic mothers and in one of the controls. It is concluded that this method of histologic investigation is important although not infallible for the detection of diabetes or prediabetes.
