Summary

CommercialPimpinella anisum (anise) andCuminum cyminum (cumin) seeds were allowed to imbibe with 2.5 and 5.0 μg/ml aflatoxin B1 medium to determine whether ;ow toxin concentrations might affect their germination and subsequent root elongation. This imbibition did not markedly inhibit either anise or cumin seed germination. However, there was a marked retardation of root elongation for both seed types. The higher toxin concentration caused a more severe degree of retardation. Whereas both aflatoxin B1 concentrations significantly inhibited anise root elongation, only 5.0 μg/ml medium significantly impaired this elongation for cumin. These results suggest that elevated aflatoxin levels within seeds could be detrimental to the early and perhaps the later development of both anise and cumin plants.
