Thermal-expansion-derived lattice instability in La2CuO4

Abstract

We present results for the thermal expansion, α(T), of both polycrystalline and single crystalline La2CuO4. Our results demonstrate the existence of an anomaly in α(T) aroundT=35 K which is clearly intrinsic and most likely due to a lattice instability.

  11. It should be noted that a third measurement on this single crystal performed about 3 months later led again to qualitatively the same anomaly but to a 30% higher absolute value of α(T) in the whole temperature regime. This shows that at least part of the crystal has deteriorated during storage in a so far unexplained way
