Abstract
We present results for the thermal expansion, α(T), of both polycrystalline and single crystalline La2CuO4. Our results demonstrate the existence of an anomaly in α(T) aroundT=35 K which is clearly intrinsic and most likely due to a lattice instability.

It should be noted that a third measurement on this single crystal performed about 3 months later led again to qualitatively the same anomaly but to a 30% higher absolute value of α(T) in the whole temperature regime. This shows that at least part of the crystal has deteriorated during storage in a so far unexplained way
