Summary
The wave pattern is obtained by a direct asymptotic method, i.e. the expected asymptotic form of the solution is substituted directly in the governing equations. An equation for the asymptotic phase function is obtained and it is solved exactly for a pressure point moving with constant velocity along a straight course on water of infinite depth, and it is solved approximately for a pressure point moving with large constant velocity along a straight course on water of finite depth.
