Summary

Owing to its high incidence of recurrence and its painfulness, the adenoid cystic carcinoma is one of the most adverse tumors in the head and neck region. The tumor is encountered predominantly in the region of the major salivary glands. The prognosis as to complete healing is poor even after radical surgical removal, and also when the paranasal sinus is involved. The course of the tumor disease seems to be more favorable when it originates from the minor salivary glands although this statement has to be made with considerable reservation due to the smaller number of cases. The histologic type of the adenoid cystic carcinoma possibly determines whether or not radiation, besides operation, will improve the prognosis or will at least lower the incidence of recurrence.
