Abstract

Reversible mesenteric vascular occlusion should be considered in young women on oral contraceptives who present with abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. A patient is described in whom these symptoms as well as small bowel changes on x-ray resolved spontaneously only after discontinuation of the contraceptives. During the acute illness, thickened mucosa with rigidity of the bowel loops, narrowing of the bowel lumen, and thumb printing were evident on small bowel series.
