Abstract

Absorption and fluorescence spectra of rarefied vapors ofp-terphenyl, 1,4-bis-[2(5-phenyloxazolyl)]-benzene, 2,5-diphenyl-1,3,4-oxadiazole, 2,5-diphenyl-1,3-oxazole, 2,5-diphenylfuran are measured. Extinction coefficients, quantum yields of fluorescence and one-photon decomposition of molecules are determined for vapors excited by pulsed laser radiation at 266 and 355 nm in the temperature range from 200 to 400°C. It is shown that for all cases studied the one-photon decomposition is only a small part of the total quantum yield of the radiationless deactivation of the fluorescent state. Laser action has, for the first time, been obtained in 2,5-diphenylfuran vapor at 356 nm.
