Conclusions
-
1.
A study was made of the compressibility of powders exhibiting different types of bond and electronic and crystal structures. For all the powders investigated, the relationship between compaction pressure and compact density was found to have the same character.
-
2.
It is shown that equations of the logarithmic type accurately describe the densification of powders in all the main stages of the cold pressing process. The slope n and the limiting pressure P * for any stage change when the mechanism of powder densification changes and are determined by the electronic structure of the elements. The physical meaning of the constants of the powder pressing equations is explained.
-
3.
It is demonstrated that data on the high-pressure compressibility of solids under static or dynamic loading conditions can be employed for explaining certain processes taking place during the densification of powders.
-
4.
A method is proposed for evaluating the compressibility of powders in terms of their density at a pressure Pb ≈ σ0.2, at which the transition is observed from the first to the second stage of densification.
