Summary
Simultaneous determinations of renin and renin substrate (angiotensinogen) were carried out in 25 normotensive pregnant women during late stages of gestation. For comparison a group of 10 normotensive healthy non pregnant women of comparable age were investigated.—All determinations of renin and renin substrate were done at the same time. To each sample renin or renin substrate, respectively, was added in excess. The procedure was then followed through in a modified manner according to the micro-method of Boucher et al. for determination of renin; purification of renin substrate was done on plasma from nephrectomized sheep.
The results show that circulating angiotensinogen is increased more than threefold late in pregnancy. Furthermore the ratio of renin activity/renin substrate (angiotensinogen) is significantly elevated during pregnancy.—The results are reviewed in the light of current concepts pertinent to the etiology of high blood pressure in toxemia of pregnancy.
