Fine structural localization of ATPase in the guinea pig thyroid

  • Published:
Histochemistry Aims and scope Submit manuscript

Summary

ATPase activity in the guinea pig thyroid was studied using the electron microscopic histochemistry. Reaction products which are localized on the basal and lateral plasma membrane of the follicular epithelial cell in the normal animal might participate the transport of iodide ion into the follicular cell.

After the injection of TSH, the apical plasma membranes of some follicular epithelial cells become also positive for this reaction. The functional significance of the enzyme localization on the apical plasma membrane was discussed.
