The use of overcorrecting prisms in the treatment of Strabismic patients without amblyopia or with cured amblyopia

Summary

This communication reports the results obtained by prismatic correction treatment in strabismus 10 years ago.

State 1: In patients with normal retinal correspondence we used prisms that exactly correct the angle of deviation to obtain sensorial orthophoria, i.e. stimulation of both foveas by the object of fixation.

State 2: In the remainder of the cases we force the non-dominant eye to fixate so that this originally deviated eye becomes the fixator. We also give an overcorrecting prism, about 15 or 20 diopters greater than that which corrects the deviation, so that an esotropia, for example, is put into sensorial divergence. After several months of constantly wearing these prisms, when retinal correspondence becomes normal in space (as determined by tests of bifoveal fusion), the patient is fitted with prisms exactly correcting the angle of deviation, as in state 1.
