Summary

Data derived from angiographic exploration of the veins of the thalamus were correlated with data obtained in anatomical and radio-anatomical studies. Since the thalamus is in the supply area of the vertebral artery, its venous drainage should be studied solely on vertebral phlebograms. The veins of the thalamus may be divided into: (1) a superior group including (a) the superior thalamic vein, large and constantly present and (b) the anterior thalamic vein, an inconstant accessory; (2) an inferior group; and (3) a posterior group, which includes a variable number of perforating veins. The drainage areas of the respective groups are analogous to the supply territories of the thalamic arteries. Observation of the thalamic veins may furnish valuable information in the investigation of deep cerebral tumours.
