Abstract

Spontaneously beating isolated preparations of cat and rabbit sinus were subjected to stretch.

Stretching the preparations increased their frequency. The effect was stronger, when stretch was applied concentrically than when it was applied linearly. Preparations from young animals showed a greater frequency response to stretch than did preparations from adult animals. During stretching the maximum diastolic potential decreased in preparations of the sinus as well as of spontaneously beating Purkinje fibers.

Changes in temperature, pH and ionic composition of the bath did not modify the frequency response of the stretched preparations. When the frequency of the preparations was lowered by hypoxia or application of acetylcholine the percentage increase of frequency during stretch was significantly higher than under normal conditions. The implications of the results concerning the Bainbridge reflex are discussed.
