Summary
Barium ions (2–4 mM/l) induce pacemaker activity in ordinary atrial and ventricular myocardial fibres of the mammalian heart. The barium-induced automatic activity closely imitates the normal impulse generation with respect to the characteristic shape of the pacemaker potentials as well as to its responses to acetylcholine, adrenaline, changes in external K+ and Ca++ or to temperature-variation. In normal pacemaker tissues as sinus node and Purkinje fibres barium initially causes a pronounced stimulation of the automatic activity, followed by progredient depolarisation and, eventually, by complete inexcitability. Two possible modes of action of barium on the myocardial fibre membranes are discussed: an increase of Na+-conductance or a decrease of K+-conductance.
