Lokalisierendes Schmecken bei Insekten

The capacity of insects to localize by tasting

Summary

  1. 1.

If the sugar receptors on a tarsus of a hungry fly (Phormia terraenovae) are stimulated, the fly turns towards the stimulated side. The same is observed in thirsty flies, if a tarsus is touched by water.

  2. 2.

The frequencies with which running flies discover a droplet with the front, middle or hind tarsi are described for drops of two sizes.

  3. 3.

If the right and left tarsi of a pair of legs are stimulated simultaneously with different solutions of sugar, the flies turn towards the more effective solution. The flies are able to make qualitative as well as quantitative spatial discriminations. If the same solution is applied to the right and left tarsi, no turning reaction is usually observed.

  4. 4.

The beetle Carabus cancellatus has gustatory receptors on its antennae. It discriminates between solutions of lactose and sucrose, given successively or simultaneously by turning towards the sucrose. Glucose and sucrose are not distinguished as accurately as lactose and sucrose.

If thirsty beetles are stimulated with dry and wet cellulose swabs, they turn towards the moist swab.

Zusammenfassung

  1. 1.

  4. 4.

Carabus cancellatus besitzt antennalen Geschmackssinn.
