Additional information

This paper was written for a symposium on possible worlds at the July 1985 meeting of the Association of Symbolic Logic at Stanford University. The second paper in the symposium was John Perry's [6]. The two papers were written independently. I would like to thank the National Endowment for the Humanities for fellowship support during the time this paper was written, and the editor for his comments on an earlier draft.
