Ultrastructural identification of axon terminals from the thalamic reticular nucleus in the medial geniculate body in the rat: An EM autoradiographic study

Summary

Injections of 3H-proline in the most caudal part of the thalamic reticular nucleus (TRN) in the rat radioactively labeled a reticulo-thalamic projection to the ventral and dorsal parts of the medial geniculate body (MGB). In EM autoradiographic material of ventral MGB, the labeled reticular terminals contain flattened (F) synaptic vesicles, dark mitochondria, and establish synapses of the symmetrical type with neuronal perikarya, main dendritic trunks and small dendrites. Reticular terminals in MGB are, therefore, similar in their ultrastructure and synaptic relations to the reticular terminals previously identified in the rat lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN). These data suggest that reticular terminals are of the F type in all dorsal thalamic nuclei innervated by the TRN.
