Summary
The artificial stabilisation of the flow of the Vaal River in the Vereeniging area has resulted in a marginal vegetation fauna which is a mixture of species typical of the marginal vegetation of lotic and lentic waters. In the stabilised part of the Vaal River (the canal-like zone) the faunal associations of the types of habitats sampled were distinctive. The amount of algae and the quantity (proportional to speed) of the water passing down the river had marked effects on the fauna of the canal-like zone. In the canal-like zone the occurrence of large numbers of individuals of Nais sp. was associated with heavy growths of algae and not exclusively with organic pollution. Organic pollution was not found in the canal-like zone of the Vaal.
Mineral pollution of the Vaal River by the Klip and Suikerbosrand Rivers leads to the flocculation of the solids suspended in the water, so that the water at the Vaal Barrage is often clear. Just above the Vaal Barrage the polluted Rietspruit enters the river and quantitative and qualitative changes in the marginal vegetation fauna at Loch Vaal reflect the enrichment of the river water.
Zooplankton developed in the lake formed by the Barrage and the clarity and enrichment of the water in this area stimulated this development. The greatest quantities of zooplankton were recorded in summer periods of low flow. The large amounts of zooplankton swept out of the lake formed by the Vaal Barrage had a marked effect on the density and species composition of the fauna (particularly the Hydropsychid Trichoptera) of the stony runs immediately below the Barrage. The zooplankton was rapidly removed from the river and 8 km below the Barrage no longer had an effect on the stony run fauna. The marginal vegetation fauna of the river immediately below the Barrage was not affected by the zooplankton.
The marginal vegetation fauna of the Vaal River below the Vaal Barrage differed little from that found in the Great Berg River in the Foothill Soft Bottom Zone and the Tugela River in the Foothill Sand Bed Zone, but the stony run fauna recorded from these three rivers differed considerably and it has been concluded that the reason for this is that conditions in stony runs are relatively stable, allowing for the development of species with restricted distribution, while in the marginal vegetation conditions are variable so that the species are hardy and widespread.
