Light scattering from bound roton pairs in He II

  • Published:
Journal of Low Temperature Physics Aims and scope Submit manuscript

The cross section for light scattering from superfluid helium in which bound roton pairs are created is calculated in a simple model, taking into account both the excitations themselves and their coupling to the light. It is shown that the depolarization ratios from bound and from noninteracting roton pairs are the same, in agreement with experimental values. Since the continuum (scattering) states for the interacting pairs are neglected here, the bound roton pairs give only a δ-function line shape, in contrast to the noninteracting roton pairs.
