Social Network Sites: Challenge for a Learning Management Model. Case Study in Ecuador

Abstract

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) as well as the one related to Social Networks in the educational field is an indisputable fact proven nowadays. Not only teachers but also students lend to use these resources to expand, reinforce, and deepen different educational contents that are worked on in the classroom. For the correct use of this type of devices and digital tools, it is necessary that users have training in this regard. In relation to the main purpose of this research study, it is established to make known what are the habits when using YouTube and Instagram by teachers and students in Ecuador and the use they give them in the classroom. It has been used as a quantitative, descriptive, and exploratory methodology. A total of 2,118 students and 407 teachers participated. Among the main results obtained, it stands out that respondents prefer to use Facebook, YouTube, and Instagram in their daily lives, prioritizing the use of YouTube and Instagram for educational and entertainment purposes. As conclusion, it is worth mentioning that the use given to Social Networks Sites, both by teachers and students, is scare in the classroom.
