Abstract
This chapter illustrates that sustainability-focused service-learning is a high-impact teaching practice that positively impacts students’ professional development while benefiting community partners. It highlights how Florida Gulf Coast University integrates sustainability service-learning opportunities into the educational experience through a variety of course-based opportunities along with individually initiated projects. With service-learning being requisite to undergraduate degree attainment at FGCU, the faculty have collaborated with alumni and community members for over a decade developing touchpoints and tools to support this endeavor. This chapter showcases these efforts with the goal of helping those new to this high-impact practice, and seasoned sustainability service-learning practitioners alike. It also provides evidence-based best practices as they relate to sustainability service-learning by showing the benefits, exploring the challenges, and charting the development and evolution of service-based sustainability projects at FGCU.
