Abstract
This chapter analyses the deprivation faced by the village people in India in terms of their capabilities on the basis of a composite human deprivation index which may serve as a yardstick to gauge the extent up to which rural development efforts in the country have contributed towards expanding the capabilities of the village people and, therefore, have contributed to the development of the village. The chapter also explores how the deprivation faced by the village people is influenced by selected defining characteristics of the village. The analysis provides the empirical evidence in support of the village development approach to address the deprivation faced by the village people in the context of their capabilities expansion.
