Peace and Pedagogy of Forgiveness

The notion of Peace has long been thought to be problematic. Alternating periods of war and peace, or obliteration and recovery of peace underline Mark Twain’s saying that “History doesn’t repeat itself but it often rhymes.” The role of forgiveness in restoring peace is the theme of this entry on peace education. The motto “truth and reconciliation” implies and is compatible with often incongruous concepts of peace such as the absence of conflict, a developmental social order, equilibrium of powers, and a sustained disposition of people toward peace (See “Conceptualization of Peace Education” in this Section by Jae Park).

This entry examines the following notions: (1) reconciliation as a precondition for peace; (2) the possibility of reconciliation and peace without forgiveness; and (3) the feasibility of teaching forgiveness toward peace.
