Abstract
This chapter introduces the book’s exploratory and sociotheological approach that combines sociological perspectives and ethical views of Catholic social teaching (CST) in understanding some urgent social and public health issues on the COVID-19 pandemic that affect the global common good. It provides the book’s background, primary objective, theoretical orientation, source of textual data, overall content, and summary of the book chapters. Moreover, it clarifies the role of social action in the Christian faith and CST as a Christian guide for reflection, judgment, and social action. It also explains the importance of sociology and the social sciences in providing an empirical foundation for moral situations before making moral judgment and applying CST’s moral principles. Lastly, it discusses the book’s significance to the “socio-theological turn” in religious studies and highlights the necessity of modern sociology in Catholic moral theology and Church’s social mission during COVID-19 pandemic.
