Zusammenfassung
In diesem Kapitel wird zunächst ein Überblick über die Annahmen gegeben, die der psychologischen Forschung zugrunde liegen, insbesondere über die Annahmen, die auf psychologischen Konstrukten und ihrer Messung basieren. Anschließend wird die psychologische Forschung zum Konzept der Handlungsfähigkeit selektiv untersucht, wobei der Schwerpunkt auf der Handlungsfähigkeit im Zusammenhang mit der Umsetzung und Veränderung von Verhalten liegt. Die für die psychologischen Kapitel in diesem Band verwendete Definition lautet: die Fähigkeit und das Vermögen, selbstbestimmt auf das Ziel bzw. die Ziele der Verbesserung der Umwelt und/oder der Umstände hinzuarbeiten. Abschließend wird die These vertreten, dass die autonome Motivation im Sinne der Selbstbestimmungstheorie (SDT) ein zentraler Mechanismus der Handlungsfähigkeit ist und sich als Konzept für die Forschung am besten eignet.

Behavioristische Ansätze, die einen bedeutenden Einfluss auf die zeitgenössische Psychologie haben, gehen nicht von solchen psychologischen Konstrukten aus und betrachten Verhalten lediglich als Funktion der Interaktion von Umweltreizen mit physiologischen und sozialen Antrieben sowie früheren Erfahrungen.

Die Autorin dieses Kapitels will damit nicht sagen, dass das erste Lager irrelevant ist. Die Entschlüsselung der neurologischen Grundlagen des Handelns ist wichtig für das weitere Verständnis der menschlichen Psyche und ihrer Beziehung zum Verhalten. Selbst wenn sich herausstellt, dass die Handlungsfähigkeit eine Illusion ist, zeigt die Fülle der Studien, dass der Zusammenhang zwischen der Illusion und dem Verhalten robust ist, sodass es wahrscheinlich auch eine neurologische Erklärung gibt.
