Potential Use of Treated Produced Water in Irrigation: A Review

Abstract

Produced water—major residue of hydrocarbon extraction. The ratio between produced water and oil can even reach up to 100:1. The scarcity of water motivates to use the treated produced water in different activities like irrigation, livestock, industries, etc. The different treatment methods are compared according to their merits and demerits which reflects that ultrafiltration is the suitable treatment method of produced water because of its comparably small pore sizes, cost-effectiveness and ease of use. The toxicity due to produced water on human and environment is also reviewed in this study along with the costs involved with different discharge methods. It is found in the study that most feasible method to dispose produced residual water from the hydrocarbon extraction is to use it in irrigation of crops in water-scarce areas.
