Abstract
The limits and potential of empathy to promote negative and positive peace are explored using a transdisciplinary framework that places peace psychology at its center. For negative peace, the use of empathy to prevent and mitigate violence is examined in relation to two issues that bear on human survival: nuclear armaments and cycles of violence that characterize intrastate conventional wars. For positive peace, defined as the mitigation of structural violence and pursuit of social justice, empathy is examined in relation to two issues that bear on human well-being: climate change and inequality.
