Abstract

In recent years, adaptive modulation and adaptive FEC techniques have received considerable attention for improving the performance of wireless networks. The analysis of switching points is a key factor in maximizing the performance of systems using these techniques. In this paper, it is analyzed the ideal switching points of an adaptive hybrid approach that combines adaptive modulation and adaptive FEC techniques, considering a Nakagami-m fading channel. The criteria of maximum throughput and power metric is used to compute the optimum switching points. Also, we analyzed the influence of the channel model in determining the ideal switching points; for this purpose, the parameter m of the Nakagami-m model was varied. It showed up with the results achieved that the best switching points depend on: the channel model and the selected performance criterion.
