Abstract
Taking the reconstruction of the existing old caverns in the Jintan salt mine in China into gas storage facilities as an example, this chapter describes the methods for the selection and evaluation of existing old caverns, the reconstruction techniques, and the sealing property evaluation after reconstruction. The surface conditions, geologic conditions, and cavern conditions are mainly considered in the selection of an old cavern. After the above-mentioned optimization and evaluation, the mechanical stability of the optimized cavern should be evaluated. The stability of the existing old caverns in a salt mine is evaluated using the FLAC3D software. Finally, existing brine extraction caverns with favorable conditions are selected. Old caverns with acceptable sealing property evaluation results can be converted into gas storage facilities.
