Notes

  1. 1.

The extent to which ‘Eastern’ Orthodoxy can rightfully be included among the ‘Western’ Christian traditions is debatable. Opinions are bound to differ, particularly with respect to Orthodox traditions in Lebanon and the broader Middle East. They are intimately connected to the Greek Orthodox, French Catholic, and Maronite traditions historically. Yet Christianity, like both Judaism (and Islam) before it, was originally a ‘Middle Eastern’ religion. To what degree Malik’s tradition in particular was shaped by Western cultural norms and/or fostered its own distinctively Middle Eastern heritage is a question beyond the scope of this Introduction.
