Abstract
CT and MRI are two major radiological modalities for staging assessment for gallbladder cancer. Overall diagnostic performance of multidetector-row CT for T factor is over 80%, whereas those for N and M factors are around 50% (sensitivity) and 70% (sensitivity), respectively. As for MR imaging, overall diagnostic performance for T and N factors is reportedly over 80–90% (accuracy) and around 70% (sensitivity), respectively. For the assessment of N and M factors, the usefulness of fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG-PET) or apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values has also been reported. Adding FDG-PET or ADC information may not only enhance the diagnosis when CT or MRI findings are equivocal but also be independent biomarkers to predict the prognosis of gallbladder cancer patients. With the usage of these state-of-the-art radiological modalities, relatively high accuracy can be achieved for gallbladder cancer staging.
