Abstract
There is no health without mental health. Mental health care is one of the important facets of the health service system as a whole. This chapter will provide a brief general overview of mental health services. Firstly, history of mental health care would be mentioned. The traditional model stressed on custodial care and medical foci at the early time. Those old practices also emphasised much more on being responsive to the risks and problems manifested by mental patients. These have gradually been changed when there are service users with more and more complex needs in the community. The care scope is therefore no longer confined to mental patients themselves. The needs of the carers, concern of the general public as well as the sustainability of government services have become themes for discussion from time to time. Various models of care and practices, such as the biomedical model, biopsychosocial model, different levels of case management model and strengths model, have been developed. While each model has its own characteristics, the models are moving with the international service trend of mental health care. Key elements of these care models will be highlighted. A round-up discussion would be made about their strengths and limitations as well as their potentials in the future development in primary care.
