Abstract
Globalization, as suggested in the previous chapter, has paradoxical results in terms of its impact on culture. At one level it promotes the expansion of the range of known cultural alternatives—a form of cultural democracy, while at another actually allowing or encouraging other versions of culture to become hegemonic. This chapter explores these themes in greater depth in four dimensions. The first of these is to trace the development of the “transnationalisation” of culture and the ways in which this phenomenon has been treated in the social sciences. The second is by examining the meaning and nature of citizenship in a transnational context. The third is by examining the implications of such key aspects of transnationalism such as international migration, and the fourth is an exploration of ideas of cultural nationalism that have emerged in some places to counter the perceived ill effects on cultural identities of transnational processes.
