The Baiyinchang copper-polymetallic mine is located in Baiyin City, Gansu Province. It includes the Zheyaoshan copper mining area, Huoyanshan copper mining area, Tongchanggou copper mining area, Xiaotieshan polymetallic mining area and Sigequan polymetallic mining area, which cover a total area of 25 km2to form the Baiyinchang field. The ore bed is in the Middle Cambrian sodium-rich spilitic keratophyre layer, which was formed by a marine volcanic eruption. Baiyinchang is an old mine. According to historical records, silver and gold mining were already occurring during the early Hongwu period of the Ming Dynasty. During this time, the Jinfangou in the Houyashan was already producing a full bucket of gold every day. Lanzhou was once called Jincheng (literally ‘Gold Town’) because it was said to be a gathering and distribution centre of gold manufactured by Baiyinchang.
