Abstract
Cartilage is usually modeled as a ‘poroelastic continuum.’ A continuum model is a spatially averaged model of a material. Developing a continuum model for porous media entails choosing a length scale for ‘representative elementary volumes’ (REVs) (Bear and Bachmat 1991), over which the spatial averaging of physical quantities takes place. The REV length scale needs to be large enough to average out the effect of discrete components that make up a porous media on quantities of interest (e.g. porosity), but still small enough to provide detailed information that is useful for the intended purpose.
