Abstract
Despite challenges and negative impact on both sides, strong agricultural ties between China and the United States have proven to be mutually beneficial in various aspects: trade balancing, job creation, inflation containment, and diet diversification, among others. Nonetheless, amid growing strategic rivalry between the two sides, food has become increasingly politicized. This chapter observes that with the balance of “food power” shifts in favor of China, which had long worried being a victim of America’s food power, the Chinese government has started to use “food power” as a carrot and a stick to induce acceptable US behaviors.
