Abstract

Periodic paralyses are a group of channelopathies resulting in repetitive muscle weakness lasting for hour to days. Certain triggers precipitate the attacks, and initially, patients remain normal in between attacks. If multiple events occur, residual weakness can ensue. Periodic paralysis can be primary or secondary to acquired conditions like thyrotoxicosis. Primary forms are hyperkalemic, hypokalemic and Andersen–Tawil syndrome. Genetic diagnosis is now feasible. Avoiding triggers and appropriate therapy improves quality of life.
