Summary
This work provides an overview of the educational offer bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering in 37 institutions of higher education recognized by the Mexican Society of Biomedical Engineering (SOMIB). In addition to mentioning items such as school affiliation, denomination and duration of programs, we classified 2 392, first, according to the categories established by the Accreditation Council for Teaching Engineering (CACEI) and, secondly, based on topics of interest to the 38th Annual International Conference (2016) of the IEEE-EMBS. The first classification found that 51% of the courses studied correspond to Engineering Sciences and Applied Engineering, Basic Sciences 24.7%, Social Sciences and Humanities 17.4% and 6.9% to other courses. In the second classification, only 9.7% were related to the topics of the 38th Conference of the EMBS, of which 22% are on “devices, technology and therapeutic systems and diagnostic, clinical engineering,” 13% “Processing biomedical signals “, 13%” Bio-robotics, surgical planning and Biomechanics “11% on” Neural Engineering, the neuromuscular system and rehabilitation, “10%” cell and tissue engineering, micro and nano-bioengineering “ 9% on “Computer systems and synthetic biology, modeling of multiscale systems”, 7% on “biomedical imaging and Image processing”, 7% on “biomedical Informatics and Health”, 5% “portable systems and biomedical sensors”, 2% on “Engineering cardiovascular and respiratory system” and 1% on “Education in Biomedical Engineering and Society”. We are confident that this work serves as a descriptive guide to the inclination of each of the programs studied and quantitatively submit its offer on topical issues.
