Abstract

Curcumin (diferuloylmethane or 1, 7-bis-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxylphenyl)-1, 6-heptadiene-3, 5-dione), a phenolic compound and a yellow spice, is the active ingredient of the turmeric spice from the plant Curcuma longa which has been used for thousands of years in traditional medicine for various ailments like inflammatory diseases in Asia. Not only is this used in treating inflammatory diseases, but it is also being used extensively for centuries in cooking. In Ayurveda, Unani, and Siddha medicine, turmeric powder is used as a home remedy for various diseases.
