Abstract

Jeju Island, in the East China Sea, is the low crest of a dormant shield volcano. The island is characterized by the presence of lava tube made by lava flows that formed over a period of 1.2 million years until about 25,000 years ago. The lava flows are made of fine-grained basalt in the form of great tubes of rock, creating an exceptional system of lava tubes. In addition to the lava tubes, the World Heritage site includes a segment of volcanic tuffs and a segment of volcanic peak, the highest in Korea. The site bears testimony of the history of the planet, its features and processes. The biocharacteristics of Jeju Island, extremely diverse for such a small area, are also important, showing influences from East Asiatic, East Siberian, and Indo-Malaysian domains.
