Historical Development of Iranian Higher Education

Iran, also called Persia and officially known as the Islamic Republic of Iran (IRI), is a country in Western Asia with over 87 million inhabitants. Iran is the world’s 18th most populous country and the second largest country in the Middle East. Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest continuous major civilizations. The Academy of Gondishapur (Gondishapur University) established by Shapur I (Shapur the Great, 240/42–270/72 BC) was the first historical Iranian university that offered education and training in medicine, philosophy, science (chemistry and biology), and theology. Early Islamic universities in Iran (1037–1194) called the Nizamiyyah were a group of the medieval institutions of higher education established by Khwaja Nizam al-Mulk in the eleventh century in Iran. Nizamiyyah universities mainly offered education in religious jurisprudence.
