Zoogeographical Aspects of the Australian Dipterofauna

  • Chapter
Biogeography and Ecology in Australia

Part of the book series: Monographiae Biologicae ((MOBI))

Abstract

It is not possible at present to give an exact picture of the Australian fauna of Diptera from the zoogeographical aspect, because our knowledge of it is very far from complete. Many families are inadequately studied. Papers published by the author make this very evident: for example, in 1926 Tillyard knew only 1 genus, with 5 species, of Apioceridae, a family very well developed in Australia; in 1953 the author listed 2 genera with 64 and 6 species respectively. Not only were new species discovered, but new groups of them. Some families which were unknown to Tillyard, for example the Thy-reophoridae and Lonchopteridae, were recorded later. The position is altered by each new family revision.
