Abstract

Antwerp, commercial and financial centre of the whole world at the middle of the 16th century, changed into a sleeping city after the closing of the Scheldt in 1585 by Dutch rebellions. This paralysis of the harbour activities lasted during more than two centuries. At the end of the 18th century French revolutionary armies occupied the Austrian Netherlands and urged the Dutch to reopen the stream for international navigation. Immediately after the Schedlt had been reopened for international navigation relations were taken up again with foreign harbours.
