Abstract
As the population of our planet climbs inexorably, the energy resources upon which man now relies steadily dwindle. Projections for the year 2063 A.D. of either the total world population or the available supplies of coal, oil and gas are fraught with manifold uncertainties. Nonetheless, if conservative estimates of the rates of population growth and the increase in per capita energy usage are combined with optimistic estimates of the true fossil fuel reserve, it is perfectly clear that gigantic new sources of low-cost energy must be fully developed within the next century.
