Abstract

Swedish family law acquired its modern shape mainly in the late 1910s, the 1920s and the early 1930s, when the old legal order, which for the most part was laid down as long ago as 1734 in the Code of Laws, was revised after a long-felt need of reforms following the changes in society described in the introductory chapter of this volume. The reform work of the earlier part of the century resulted in the three “Books” which make up Swedish family law, or at least the greater and more important part of it. These books — the Book on Marriage, the Book on Parents and Children and the Book on Successions — suggest suitable subdivisions of the topic now in issue.
