The use of biosensor technology to search for orphan biomolecules: towards the relaxin receptor

  • Chapter
Relaxin 2000

Abstract

Although it is 75 years since relaxin was first described [1], and almost 20 years since the cDNA sequences encoding for rat, porcine and human relaxin were reported [2,3,4], the isolation and characterisation of the cognate receptor/s, despite extensive investigation [5,6], has to date defied elucidation. Since the receptor would appear to be the key to a fuller understanding of the molecular mechanisms of action of relaxin [6], which is fundamental for structure-based design of agonists and antagonists with therapeutic potential, new approaches for its isolation warrant investigation.
