Abstract
This chapter will discuss the theory and applications of the photomagnetic and magnet-optic effects. These two phenomena are conceptually very similar but differ mainly from their point of reference. Photomagnetism may be described as the change in the magnetic response of a material that results from exposure of that material to electromagnetic radiation. On the other hand, magneto-optics is the effect that a magnetized material has on electromagnetic radiation. These two phenomena are strongly intertwined and under active study in the development of high density magnetic recording media. This chapter will discuss these two phenomena and show how together they are being used in state of the art high density magnetic recording applications.
